Armenia
(Terra di Aram) non è nominata in nessuna parte della Bibbia originale ebraica, sebbene si trovi per due volte nominata come Ararat nella versione inglese (2 Re 19:37).
Descrizione: L’Armenia è l’altopiano da cui il Tigri, l’Eufrate, l’Araxes e l’Acampsis sorgono: i primi due fluiscono verso il Golfo Persico, il terzo verso il Mar Caspio e l’ultimo verso il Mar Nero. Può essere definita come il nucleo centrale del sistema montuoso dell’Asia occidentale. Dalla parte centrale dell’altopiano partono due catene montuose elevate, che corrono da est verso ovest.
Suddivisioni: nella Bibbia sono menzionate 3 distinte regioni.
- ARARAT è indicato come il luogo dove i figli di Sennacherib fuggirono (Isaia 37:38). La regione è quella che circonda il Monte omonimo;
- MINNI è menzionata solo in Geremia 51:27. Probabilmente si può identificare con la regione di Minyas, nell’alta valle del ramo Murad-su del fiume Eufrate;
- TOGARMAH è annotata in due passaggi di Ezechiele 27:14 e 38:6, entrambi i quali portano ad una identificazione con la regione armena.
Presente (XIX secolo, n.d.t.): gli armeni, che attualmente sono circa 2 milioni, sono essenzialmente cristiani. Circa la metà vive in Armenia. L’attività principale è il commercio. L’Armenia è divisa, a livello governativo, tra Russia, Turchia e Persia.

Description. –Armenia is that lofty plateau whence the rivers Euphrates, Tigris, Araxes and Acampsis pour down their waters in different directions; the first two to the Persian Gulf, the last two respectively to the Caspian and Euxine seas. It may be termed the nucleus of the mountain system of western Asia. From the centre of the plateau rise two lofty chains of mountains, which run from east to west.
Divisions. –Three districts are mentioned in the Bible.
(1) ARARAT is mentioned as the place whither the sons of Sennacherib fled. (Isaiah 37:38) It was the central district, surrounding the mountain of that name.
(2) MINNI only occurs in (Jeremiah 51:27) It is probably identical with the district Minyas, in the upper valley of the Murad-su branch of the Euphrates.
(3) TOGARMAH is noticed in two passages of (Ezekiel 27:14; 38:6) both of which are in favor of its identity with Armenia.
Present condition. –The Armenians, numbering about two millions, are nominally Christians. About half of them live in Armenia. Their favorite pursuit is commerce. The country is divided, as to government, between Russia, Turkey and Persia.–ED.
